OFFER DESCRIPTION

Post-doc position in a project funded by the National Science Centre: “Transparency – important morphological trait for qualitative assessment of marine particles and plankton (T-trait)”. The job will be working on particles and plankton data assessed optically by UVP (Underwater Vision Profiler) and LOPC (Laser Optical Plankton Counter), mostly in polar waters, and seeking for their relationships with spatio-temporal and environmental gradients, with the special emphasis on investigating their transparency.

Projects’ abstract:
Plankton organisms as well as marine snow are the crucial elements to follow processes by which organic carbon is produced, stored, utilized and transported towards the sea floor. Their role in Biological Carbon Pump is highly determined by their size, but possibly also other morphological traits are important. The T-trait project aims to recognize the potential of transparency as valuable morphological trait that is easily assessed by automatic methods, to broaden a spectrum of meaningful traits describing particles and plankton quality for better assessment of the state and functioning of marine pelagic realm and carbon export to sea bottom. The concentrations and morphological traits of plankton and particles will be tested in relation to environmental factors (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll fluorescence, chemistry, turbidity) as well as across spatial (horizontal and vertical) and temporal perspectives. Additionally, the relationship between transparency and other morphological traits (e.g. shape) will be investigated. It is hypothesized that by following the variability of transparency trait across all those factors, its specific biogeochemical meaning and relationship to specific marine processes will be found. For this purpose, datasets provided by the most common and modern automatic method for in situ particles and plankton assessment will be used: Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP). As a model system, polar regions were selected, because the on-going climate warming leaves significant footprints there, with ice retreat as one of the most spectacular consequences. Therefore, the coastal polar waters are perfect landscape for tracking spatio-temporal variations in biogeochemical response of pelagic ecosystem to such changes. The novelty of the proposed research is centred around the perspective of more comprehensive perception of marine snow and zooplankton structuring, by adding the other than size master trait – transparency to expand biogeochemical connectivity and facilitate predictions of ecosystem responses to stressors such as climate change.

Tasks:
1. Analysis of huge databases collected by UVP (Underwater Vision Profiler) and LOPC (Laser Optical Plankton Counter)
2. Statistical analysis of the relationships between the occurrence and distribution patterns of particles plankton and environmental parameters
3. Statistical analysis of the relationships between morphological traits of particles and plankton across spatio-temporal and environmental gradients
4. Visualizations, synthesizing, summarizing, and presenting obtained results
5. Project dissemination in form of conference presentations, social media, popular
and science articles
6. Assistance in supervising students
7. Writing of 2-3 scientific papers
