Project description:
TRACE: Tracing the footprints of deglacial and eaRly Holocene meltwAter pulses in the European ArctiC from Barents Sea sedimEnts

The last deglaciation of the Northern Hemisphere was marked by abrupt meltwater pulses that significantly disrupted ocean circulation and climate systems. While major events, such as Meltwater Pulse-1A and the Younger Dryas, have been widely studied, early Holocene freshwater outbursts from paleo lakes, particularly Baltic Paleo Lakes, remain poorly constrained in the marine record. This knowledge gap is especially evident in the European Arctic, where the climatic impacts and environmental consequences of such events may have been substantial but remain largely unexplored.

This project aims to identify and trace post-glacial meltwater pulses, especially early Holocene outbursts from Baltic paleo lakes, into the Barents Sea using a multiproxy analysis of marine sediments. Preliminary data from sediment core OCE22-KV02-GC reveal distinct meltwater events that align with known lake outbursts (~11.7 and ~10.3 kyr BP), suggesting a stronger freshwater signal in the region than previously recognized.

To resolve the timing, sources, and pathways of these events, we will apply a novel combination of geochemical (alkenones, stable isotopes), micropaleontological (foraminifera and diatoms), molecular (terrestrial sedaDNA), and sedimentological proxies across five sediment cores. Special emphasis will be placed on the salinity-sensitive %C37:4 alkenone index, sediment color reflectance, terrestrial sterols, and sedaDNA to detect freshwater input and sediment provenance. These will be integrated with vast numbers of supportive proxies and robust age models to reconstruct the environmental impacts of meltwater pulses and assess their influence on Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

By systematically linking Baltic paleo lake outbursts to marine freshening signals for the first time, TRACE addresses a critical gap in Arctic paleoceanography and paleoclimatology. The findings will improve our understanding of abrupt climate transitions and provide a valuable analog for assessing the impacts of modern and future Arctic freshwater discharge under accelerating climate change.
