Wymagania:
The selection procedure is open for all individuals, who meet the requirements set out in Articles 113 and 116.2.3) of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, and who meet the following eligibility criteria according to § 165 of the Statute of the Jagiellonian University:
• holding at least a doctoral degree;
• having relevant scientific achievements;
• taking active part in scientific life.
Additional requirements necessary for employment (indicated in order of priority):
• doctoral degree obtained in the year of employment in the
project or within the 7 years preceding 1 January of the year
of employment in the project;
• doctoral degree obtained from an institution other than the
one where employment in this post is planned, or at least 10
months of continuous and documented postdoctoral research
carried out at an institution other than the one implementing
the project and in a country other than the one in which the
doctoral degree was obtained;
• good command of the English language;
• familiarity with computer software such as LaTeX and
Mathematica, Fortran, C;
• versatility: good knowledge of general relativity, quantum field
theory in flat and curved spacetime, as well as of numerical
methods.

The successful candidate will work in the group of dr. George Zahariade funded by NCN Sonata Bis grant “Gravity and Field Theory at the Classical-Quantum Interface”, contract number
2023/50/E/ST2/00231.
Project description:
The laws that govern everyday life are mostly described by classical physics: the motion of objects obeys Newton's laws (or, if velocities are high, Einstein's special theory of relativity), electromagnetic phenomena obey Maxwell's equations, and the motion of planets can be understood using Newton’s law of attraction (or Einstein's general theory of relativity if greater precision is required). On a microscopic scale, the world is not subject to the laws of classical physics: even such simple ideas as the trajectory of an electron around a proton in a hydrogen atom cannot be correctly defined. We can understand the microscopic world using the tools of quantum physics, in which phenomena are random, fuzzy and it is generally impossible to predict the result of a measurement with absolute certainty. One thus foresees how the classical and quantum worlds can be difficult to reconcile...
The goal of the project is to explore two major lines of research lying at the interface of the classical and quantum worlds. The first one will investigate the potential consequences (observational or otherwise) of the quantization of gravitational waves, while the second one will aim to better understand the coupled dynamics between quantum excitations and the classical backgrounds that source them, with applications to cosmology and field theory.
This postdoc position is mostly targeted to the second line of research.
