Candidate’s research profile - R2 - Recognised Researcher
Project description:
The objective of this project is to develop and investigate a new class of self-assembled microcrystalline emitters based on Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). In the proposed materials, the TADF process will be confined within the COF interior and accompanied by a through-space charge-transfer (TSCT) mechanism. To achieve this, electron-donating (D) and electron-accepting (A) moieties will be simultaneously incorporated into the COF structure. The D and A units will be electronically distinct but structurally analogous in terms of linker length and geometric alignment, enabling their mutual exchangeability and systematic tuning of electronic properties across a series of isoreticular D–A COFs. Self-assemblydriven crystallization is expected to promote spontaneous face-to-face D–A alignment, which is essential for short-range interactions and for forming charge-transfer excited states with spatially separated frontier orbitals. The project will combine organic synthesis, COF materials chemistry, structural characterization, photophysics, and numerical modeling. Molecular building blocks will be synthesized and used to construct COFs with predetermined architectures. The resulting materials will be characterized using PXRD, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and solid-state NMR. Comparative physicochemical studies—including absorption, steady-state and time-resolved emission, and quantum-yield measurements—together with computational modeling and crystallographic analysis will identify the structural factors that enhance or suppress TSCT-TADF efficiency in organic crystalline materials. The project therefore requires expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, porous materials (COFs), and excited-state photophysics (TADF).
Key responsibilities include:
Required qualifications: Expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, with documented experience in conducting reactions under inert-atmosphere conditions; experience in the preparation and characterization of COFs or other self-assembled organic materials; broad knowledge of materialcharacterization techniques, including PXRD, Raman and IR spectroscopy, and photoluminescence methods.
Resposibilities: PhD student supervision; synthesis of molecular precursors and covalent organic frameworks; material and spectroscopic characterization of the obtained materials; preparation of COF thin films and assembly of COF-based OLED devices; OLED device characterization; data interpretation; preparation of publications.
