Open Science

From its very inception, the National Science Centre has aimed to build a research-funding system based on the very best European practices and standards. For many years now, it has been a member of Science Europe, an association that brings together more than 30 research-funding organizations from 27 European countries under the overarching objective of shaping science-funding policies and fostering high-quality research standards. Its priorities in recent years have included measures designed to ensure open access to data and publications generated by research projects funded or co-funded from public sources.

The NCN has taken active part in the activities of SE's working groups in charge of drafting specific open-access guidelines for research data and publications. The product of these efforts was a practical guide to uniform international research data management standards, entitled "Practical Guide to the International Alignment of Research Data Management", whose provisions were included, as a Data Management Plan, in the proposal application form introduced as of the 33rd edition of NCN calls, announced on 15 March 2019.

In September 2018, together with 10 other European research-funding organizations, the NCN formed what is known as cOAlition S with the primary objective to ensure full, immediate, open access to all publications containing research data obtained in projects funded by its member agencies. The chief premises of cOAlition S were laid down in Plan S, which is scheduled for implementation in June 2020.
