Professor Andrzej Sobczak graduated from Gdansk University of Technology. He received the following degrees: Master of Science in Chemistry (1974); Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry (1979); Doctor of Science (habilitation) in Medicine/Medical Biology (2006); Titular Professor of Medicine (2013). Professor Sobczak did his post-doctoral training in 1983-1985 at University of Würzburg (Institute of Organic Chemistry). Currently he is the head of the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the School of Pharmacy with the Division of Laboratory Medicine (Medical University of Silesia) and the head of the Chemical Hazards and Genetic Toxicology Department at the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health in Sosnowiec. His research interests include: removing anti-infectious drug pollution from the environment and harm reduction related to smoking tobacco, and assessment of new and emerging nicotine products. As of 2018, Professor Sobczak has published more than 180 research papers, including 60 papers published in journals listed in the Journal Citation Reports; his Hirsch index equals 21 and the current number of citations is 2400 (excluding self-citations).

Professor Sobczak has supervised seven doctoral dissertations and two doctoral grants. He also served as a principal investigator for two scientific grants funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland; and was a key Investigator for 13 grants funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland and the State Committee for Scientific Research in Poland. He has received several scientific awards including: awards from the President of the Medical University of Silesia and the award from the Ministry of Health of Poland for his contributions to science (2010). Professor Sobczak is the editor-in-chief for the section “Harm Reduction. Medicine – Society – Family” for the Family Medicine Journal. Professor Sobczak also serves as a Disciplinary Proceedings Representative (for academic teachers) at the Medical University of Silesia. He is a recipient of the Cross of Merit and the medal from the Commission of National Education of Poland.
