Prof Dr hab. Dariusz Markowski is a scientific employee of the Institute of Monuments and Conservation of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and principal of the Conservation and Restoration of Modern Art Department. He is the author of 4 books, more than 80 articles in domestic and foreign magazines, conservation opinions, projects and programmes, scientific analyses, authenticity critiques of works of art, studies of technology and technique in works of art.

He is a reviewer of doctoral dissertations and specialist articles from the field of conservation and restoration of works of art (“Interdisciplinary Research on the Works of Art”, “International Journal of Young Conservators and Restorers of Works of Art”); previously he was scientific editor of AUNC Zabytkoznawstwo i Konserwatorstwo (Acta Universitatis Nicolai Copernici, Knowledge of historical monuments and conservation) (2010-2016)

In his conservation achievements, beside conservation and restoration of wall paintings and altars (including gothic ones and a number of polychromed sculpture), the vast majority of his work consists of easel paintings (more than 360 from museums, churches and private collections, both Polish and foreign property) including works by such remarkable artists as: Titian, Guido Reni, Rubens, Jan Matejko, Jacek Malczewski, Olga Boznańska, Leon Wyczółkowski. Attention should also be paid to the conservation of large-format images, including the paintings: Settled oxen by Jan Styka, being one of the fragments of the cut Transylvanian panorama; The Orłowski cliff by Marian Mokwa; and the double-sided painting by Andrzej Wróblewski entitled Station on the Recovered Territories/The emotional content of the revolution from the National Museum in Poznań – after its conservation treatment the painting was exhibited at the Berlin exhibition Side by Side. Poland – Germany. A 1000 years of Art and History at the turn of 2011 and 2012.

A special place in the achievements of Prof. Markowski is occupied by expert opinions and opinions on the authenticity of works of art carried out for private owners, state institutions (courts, prosecutors office) and auction houses.

He also deals with the legal aspect of the art market and the responsibility of experts, which has been reflected in numerous publications. He acts as an expert witness in the field of research into the technique, technology and conservation of works of art by participating in proceedings regarding the authenticity of works of art (among others, The beach in Pourville by Claude Monet from the collection of National Museum in Poznań or recovered paintings lost during World War II: the pastel drawing by Teodor Axentowicz A woman in peacock feathers, from the Zachęta gallery and the gothic painting on panel The martyrdom of Saint Philip from the Wrocław Museum.)

As a conservator he takes part in numerous supervisions of conservation works, as well as the work of various organizations and associations dealing with the issues of cultural heritage protection. He is an honorary member of the Henry van de Velde Association in Poland, a member of the Association of Friends of the Painting and Polychrome Sculpture Conservation Department, a member of the architectural and urban section of the Society of Friends of the City of Bydgoszcz. Since 2006, for the second term, he is a member of the Provincial Council for the Protection of Monuments at the Lubuskie Voivodship Conservator.

Since 2011, he has been the founder and president of the Bydgoszcz Branch of the Association of Monument Conservators, a member of the Architectural and Urban Planning Commission in Bydgoszcz and the Civic Culture Council in Bydgoszcz. He is a member of the Museum Council of the Leon Wyczółkowski Museum in Bydgoszcz and the Museum of Sopot. In 2013, he was invited as a juror to the International Competition Jury “Development of the urban and architectural concept of Fara Gubińska as a centre of culture and communication” under the project: “Renovation of the Parish Church Tower in Eurocity Gubin-Guben – cross-border development of culture, art and science.”

From 2014, he has been chairman of the Social Council for the Aesthetics of the City for the Mayor of the City of Bydgoszcz, and from 2016 the chairman of the Committee on the History, Culture and Art of Sopot at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 2015, he has been a member of the expert team assessing the culture requests of the City of Bydgoszcz, and from 2017 a member of the expert evaluation team for the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Professor Markowski for his achievements in the field of science and research was honoured in 2017 with an individual distinction from the Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University.
