Graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry at the Wroclaw Technical University (currently the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology “WUST”), where he was also awarded doctorate in 1977 and obtained habilitation in 1985. His research was initially concerned with electrical conductivity of organics, however following a postdoctoral stay at the National Research Council of Canada (1979/80), he focused his research on laser light – matter interactions, including nonlinear optics. He continued his research in this area during his stay at SUNY Buffalo in the late 1980’s, as well as between 1991 and 2008, during his work in Australia at the Laser Physics Centre of the Australian National University in Canberra.

Having received the title of Chemistry Professor from the Polish President in 2007, he returned to his Alma Mater in 2008, where he was appointed Director of the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. Following a reorganization of the WUST in 2015, Professor Samoć was appointed Head of the newly created Advanced Materials Engineering and Modelling Group.

His nonlinear optics experience acquired in Australia, combined with experience in nanophotonics and biophotonics gained during his stay at the University at Buffalo (2001-2008), formed the basis for a research project „Organometallics in nanophotonics“ which was awarded funding by the Foundation for Polish Science in 2009 under the WELCOME programme. The project was carried out by a newly formed team of young researchers and was soon recognised by the scientific community due to numerous papers published in the top journals. The team and its leader have received a number of prizes, scholarships and prestigious grants (e.g. “Mistrz” awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science and “Maestro” awarded by the National Science Centre). In 2015, Professor Samoć received a Prime Minister’s Prize for scientific accomplishments and in 2016, a Prize in Science awarded by the City of Wroclaw and Prize awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science. In 2017, he won the Jan Zawidzki medal for accomplishments in physical chemistry awarded by the Polish Chemical Society.

Professor Samoć is the author of over 360 papers in the journals from the ISI list and approximately 9000 citations, with an H-index of 53. He is also a co-author of several patents.
