Geographer, geomorphologist, affiliated with the Institute of Geography and Regional Development, University of Wrocław. He obtained Master degree in Geography at the University of Wrocław in 1989, PhD degree in 1995, Dr Sc in 2000. The title of professor was conferred to him in 2009. He is currently head of Geomorphology Division at the home institution. In 2002-2008 was the deputy Head of Institute for Research and International Cooperation, in 2008-2016 he was Head of Institute.

His research interests include geomorphology (science about processes shaping the surface of the Earth), physical geography and human – environment relationships, while he is also committed to geomorphological outreach. Geographically, the Sudetes mountain range in central Europe along with other parts of the Bohemian Massif in Czechia and Germany are his main research areas. Some of his projects were executed outside Poland: in Sweden, Great Britain, Portugal, Austria, Jordan, Korea, Namibia, Mexico, Brazil and in Antarctica. He authored more than 200 original and review papers, including more than 70 in journals indexed by Web of Science. He is the sole author of several books, including research monograph “Granite Landscapes of the World” (2006, Oxford University Press) and two academic textbooks in Polish: “Geomorfologia” (Geomorphology, 2006) and “Geoturystyka” (Geotourism, 2012). Since 2013 he is series editor of “World Geomorphological Landscapes” series published by Springer. His publication record also includes more than 10 popular science books and more than 100 short articles popularizing geographical knowledge.

Piotr Migoń was the recipient of British Council scholarship in London in 1994, in 1995-96 was awarded Royal Society Fellowship to effect post-doctoral stay in the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford. In 2003 he spent nine months at the University of California, Santa Cruz, as Fulbright Fellow. He lectured at universities in Czechia, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, Brazil and China.

He is a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Science. In 2005-2008 he was the President of the Polish Association of Geomorphologists. For many years involved in the International Association of Geomorphologists, where he served as Secretary (1997-2001), Vice-President (2009-2013), and Executive Committee member (since 2013). He is a member of Editorial Board of “Geomorphology” journal (Elsevier), a member of World Commission of Protected Areas of International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Karkonosze National Park and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Stołowe Mountains National Park.

Piotr Migoń was the leader of and participant in several research projects supported by the National Science Centre, Committee for Scientific Research and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. 11 early-career scientists received PhD degree under his supervision.

Privately Piotr Migoń shows keen interest in the history of Lower Silesia and ancient history, in passenger commercial aviation, is fascinated with Czech culture and language and enjoys listening to rock music from the late 1960s and 1970s.
