I am veterinarian with post graduate training in MSc and PhD in Microbiology and Parasitology. I have expertise in microbiology and molecular epidemiology. Currently, I am Senior lecturer, and Chairman Department of Animal Sciences at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology in Kenya. I have been undertaking studies on emergence and spread of AMR at animal-human interface. We have published over 10 articles on AMR in Kenya showing a high burden of AMR in human and livestock, showing possibility of spread if resistant microbes from animals to human.
Currently, in a project funded by Gates Challenge Africa and Africa Academy of Sciences, I am leading a team of experts investigating the possibility of MRSA and other resistant bacteria breaching the animal-human barrier. We are using molecular characterization techniques. So far we have shown prevalence of AMR in livestock (bacteria isolated from milk and other samples) ranging from 50-100%, depending on specific antibiotics. In humans, MRSA and other resistant microbes have been observed in prevalences ranging from 40-84%. We have established a very rich collections of isolates which are well stored for further characterization and which can be shared with other interested researchers. I am keen on partnering in projects where we can upscale what we have reported and understand the impact of one health interventions on development and transmission of AMR. Further, I am interested in designing, implementing and evaluating novel and innovative one-health interventions to control the development and transmission of AMR in developing countries such as Kenya.
