16th JPIAMR transnational call for research projects - AMR diagnostics and surveillance 2023 (DISTOMOS)

This is a match-making section for JPIAMR 16th call -AMR diagnostics and surveillance 2023 (DISTOMOS).

General Information

  • Type: Partner looking for project
  • Organisation: Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute and Hospital (IGTP)
  • Country: Spain (ES)
  • Career stage: Other.

Research area

  • Scientific area(s) of the call:
    1. Topic 1: to develop novel, or improve existing, diagnostics, including point of care diagnostics, that can rule out antimicrobial use or help identify the most effective antimicrobial treatment
  • One Health Setting:

    Human Health

  • Keywords:

Whole-genome-sequencing; rapid AMR testing; multi-drug resistant bacteria; tuberculosis.

  • Brief description of your expertise / expertise you are looking for:

The Clinical and Experimental Microbiology Group is led by Dr. Pere-Joan Cardona, Head of the Microbiology Department, at Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol (tertiary care hospital). The Microbiology Department is certified through ISO 9001:2015 standards and its activity is focused on the clinical evaluation of diagnostic tools of infectious diseases in collaboration with the industry, the study of the molecular mechanisms underlying antimicrobial resistance, and the fight against nosocomial infection. The group includes Elisa Martró’s team, principal investigator at Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) and part of the Biomedical Research Center Network for Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), that carries out the whole genomic sequencing (WGS) of pathogens of public health interest, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (reference centre in Catalonia), and multidrug-resistant bacteria. We can offer head-to-head comparison of new resistance diagnostic tests with state-of-the-art assays; a collection of multiresistant bacterial strains characterized by WGS; rapid sequencing with Nanopore (full 16S rRNA gene) and rapid detection of outbreaks of multidrug-resistant bacteria with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and WGS. We also have a platform to determine the host-pathogen interphase using Drosophila and murine models, available for virulence studies as well as determination of new prophylactic and therapeutic strategies.

  • Brief description of your project / the project you would like to join:

Multidisciplinary project of development and clinical validation of novel POC diagnostics for the detection of bacterial infection and monitoring of AMR among hospital acquired infections and severe infections acquired in the community in order to improve patient management.
