AMR; Bacteria Culturing Cow Milk; Nanopore sequencing;
I am Veterinary Microbiologist who has experience in research, teaching, and supervision of graduating students in different areas of microbiology. Recently, I and my group conducted research to identify bacterial pathogens from Ostrich eggs which fail to hatch and we isolated E. Coli O157:H7 by culturing and conducted antibiotic sensitivity testing (AMR) of the isolates using different antibiotics. Such kind of research need to be supported by bacteria isolate gene sequencing and characterization of genes responsible for such resistance. Hence, I am interested to implement Nanopore sequencing technology for rapid and accurate detection and characterization of bacteria and their genes for further research and taking corrective measures. To address the public health importance, milk as widely consumed by the public and the cows are frequently treated against mastitis cases, conducting AMR research using Nanopore sequencing technology to generate the gene sequence of these and related bacteria for detection and characterization of these them and find resistant strains in dairy milk samples timely demanding under Ethiopian conditions.
As I am interested to implement Nanopore sequencing technology for rapid and accurate detection and characterization of AMR bacteria in dairy milk samples, and detect and characterize their genes for further research and taking corrective measures, parteners who have experience in using Nanopore sequencing for such applications in important. This type of research address both animal health and public food, hence, public health problem. Mastitis is a common disease in dairy cows and they cows are treated against the disease with different and available antibiotics. Obtaining of AMR isolates is not uncommon in Ethiopia. In addition to classical bacteriological techniques and AMR testing, we will use Nanopore sequencing technology to generate the gene sequence of these and related bacteria for bacterial characterization and resistant gene detections in milk samples collected from dairy farms found in major cities in Ethiopia. The research currently demanding under Ethiopian conditions as milk is consumed (even raw) in many communities.
