  • Brief description of your expertise / expertise you are looking for:

I am writing with reference to your recent call for application for AMR diagnostics and surveillance 2023 Owing to my years of experience, creativity, and passion for healthy humans and the environment through the application of the One Health concept, I hereby wish to express my interest in joining Projects that will focus on global AMR diagnostics and surveillance using One Health Concept. I believe I am suitable to join your group due to the following reasons; Firstly, my education: I have a Ph.D. in the field of Microbiology from Universiti Putra Malaysia, an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Microbiology from Bayero University Kano-Nigeria, and several relevant online courses. This education journey has given me a lot of knowledge and skills in microbial structure, function, ecology, diversity, evolution, and/or as they relate to AMR. Further, my professional training as a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist and years of experience as a a government employee in a Nigerian University, teaching, and supervising projects in the field of AMR has further improved my technical skills in AMR. Secondly, my experience: I have years of experience in research in Medical and Environmental Microbiology, especially in the field of AMR and Molecular biology. I have vast skills in working with the environment (water, soil, air, sediments, and wastes); human and animal samples using various microbiological and molecular techniques. I have self-sufficiency, and excellent communication, writing, and data interpretation skills. To accomplish my various research objectives, I partner with international research centers such as the Big data institute of Oxford University UK, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Robert Koch Institute, Germany (P2 group, working on Acinetobacter baumannii ecology and resistance). I worked as a national consultant in a tripartite team of international and other national consultants that develop the Governance structure and governance manual for the Nigerian One Health system under the Fleming Fund Country Grants. Further, I have worked as a lead consultant to lay the foundation for the establishment of AMR surveillance for the environment sector of One Health. In addition, I led the team that conducted the needs assessment of the National environmental reference laboratories in Nigeria, to assess their capacity to conduct AMR Surveillance in environment media and develop capacity-strengthening plans. Based on the needs and capacity gaps identified, my team developed 3 option memos for the establishment of AMR surveillance and provide their respective costs for the Federal Ministry of Environment Nigeria and development partners. I also led the team that developed the AMR surveillance policy document, and 5-year AMR strategic plans for the Nigerian Ministry of Environment under the sponsorship of the UK’s Fleming Fund Country Grant and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). I have participated as a national consultant to conduct a survey of AMR entry points in Nigerian Environments, situational analysis of AMR in the environment sector, and have led in designing, and facilitating different technical and stakeholders meetings. Thirdly, my passion and skills: my passion for AMR-related research is demonstrated through my numerous publications, presentations, and community engagements. I was actively involved in AMR message dissemination to the most vulnerable community members. In view of my commitment, Welcome Trust UK was impressed and sponsored the publication of some of the activities we conducted in some local communities in Nigeria (https://youtu.be/d1o1H2CpUuc). Finally, I am recognized by my former and current employers and colleagues to be an exceptionally reliable, innovative, and productive employee. I also have excellent IT skills including internet navigation, effective use of MS office applications, and statistics. As a native of Africa, I have the flexibility in English, Arabic, and other languages and culture to operate successfully in many different contexts.
