17th JPIAMR transnational call for research projects - AMR Interventions 2024 (IMPACT)

This is a match-making section for JPIAMR 17th call - AMR Interventions 2024 (IMPACT).

General Information

  • Project title: Application of precursor-derived peracetic acid as an alternative to antimicrobials in poultry, pig and aquaculture
  • Type: Project looking for partner
  • Organisation: AGA2tech ltd
  • Country: United Kingdom (UK)
  • Career stage: Other.

Research area

  • Scientific area(s) of the call:
    1. Topic 1: Design novel or improved interventions to prevent, mitigate and /or treat fungal infections, which are resistant to treatments and/or are at risk of developing resistance
  • Subtopics:

  • One Health Setting:

Animal Health (incl. wildlife, livestock, acquatic organisms, and companion animals)

  • Keywords:

peracetic acid; poultry; water treatment; animal husbandry

  • Brief description of your expertise / expertise you are looking for:

The livestock and aquatic industries require viable alternatives to antibiotics, AGA2Tech have developed an antibiotic-free strategy using the broad-spectrum antimicrobial biocide, peracetic acid. We have successfully delivered encapsulated peracetic acid in feed and precursor-derived peracetic acid in water. The ability to control the ratio of precursors enables a low dose of peracetic acid to be generated and delivered, thereby reducing the bacterial concentration of the opportunistic pathogen whilst promoting the proliferation of the commensal organisms. We have extensive expertise in developing and commercialising biocidal products within human healthcare and are looking for expertise in applying these technologies in support of animal healthcare specifically within poultry, swine and aquaculture.

  • Brief description of your project / the project you would like to join:

With the AGA technology, we are able to reduce systemic toxicity and microbial dysbiosis by controlling the ratio of precursors ensuring the generation of peracetic acid is both efficacious and safe. Through this approach we have been able to reduce the opportunistic bacterial concentration in the jejunum whilst promoting the proliferation of commensal organisms in the caeca of poultry. We are looking to partner with projects looking to explore novel alternatives for replacing antibiotics in application related to poultry, pigs and aquaculture. Our initial studies in poultry have been published (Galgano et al, 2023 DOI: 10.1186/s40104-023-00881-w and Galgano et al 2023 DOI: 10.1016/j.psj.2022.102368). Peracetic acid is a broad spectrum antimicrobial again bacteria, fungi and viruses. Production of particles, formulation and microbiology expertise is available.
