    International Border Studies Center at the University of Gdansk is an interdisciplinary research group composed of literary and performance scholars and practitioners, historians, linguists, and social scientists interested in investigating the complexities of borders and border phenomena. Originally formed by way of American studies and informed by Southwestern and Chicanx perspectives the IBSC is interested in pursuing innovative border studies approaches and in sponsoring artistic residencies which advance border aesthetics and articulate border thinking. We are interested in studying border phenomena in both geographic and geopolitical contexts as well as in terms of epistemologies, new modes of thinking, countercultural actionality. Of special interest are works of art which articulate these new modes of thinking, especially in theater, performance. The approaches are informed by the works of, among others, Georg Simmel Johann Schimanski, Astrid Fellner, David Newman, as well as Jacques Ranciere, Jacques Derrida, Geilles Deleuze, Homi Bhabha, and many others.

  • Brief description of your project / the project you would like to join:

    International Border Studies center at the University of Gdansk is launching a project investigating border epistemologies and pluriversality (Walter D. Mignolo) in the arena of border cultural studies and border aesthetics. We are interested in investigating how border thinking is enacted as a scholarly, educational, artistic and everyday practices. This type of thinking is framed withing the larger framework of border studies as accompaniment (Barbara Tomlinson and George Lipsitz), that is border studies as a discipline fostering social action and dialog. The project is designed to foster international cooperation in the growing field of innovative border studies which combine data studies with aesthetics. of special interest are works of art in theater and performance which advance border epistemologies or ar enactments of what Mignolo calls the "border gnosis." This type of thinking is necessary in a increasingly poloarized world and works toward enhancing well-being of all for the future.
