I am an Associate Professor at the University of Bucharest. My expertise is in political philosophy/political theory, where I have published around 15 articles in international journals (e.g. Political Research Quarterly, Political Studies, Contemporary Politics, Journal of Applied Philosophy, European Journal of Political Theory etc.), several book chapters with Oxford University Press, Wiley-Blackwell, Routledge, and Bloomsbury Academic, and two Romanian-language monographs. I mainly work on democratic theory, and especially voting (disenfranchisement, compulsory voting, moral duties in voting, electoral justice, voting markets), but also on democratic resilience/erosion, theories of justice and ideal/non-ideal theory. I have been involved in several international projects, leading a team at the University of Bucharest in the H2020 funded REDEM project, and I have been the director of several nationally-funded research grants in Romania. See https://alexvolacu.com/ for more details.
I am primarily interested in projects that aim to tackle problems in the area of democratic erosion and resilience, but also projects that look at electoral institutions or behaviours. I am happy to work in an interdisciplinary project or one that has a clear empirical orientation, but while I teach and have some background in political science, European affairs, and behavioural economics, I would only be able to meaningfully contribute to the normative and conceptual parts of the project.
