The Complexity Research Group of the University of Vaasa is a multidisciplinary top research group focusing on the study and analysis of complex and wicked social phenomena. The group\'s major objective is to bring together, strengthen and expand complexity research that responds to the multi-level challenges of modern society. Challenges related to the constant need for change in systems, structures and operating models and the different effects of phenomena brought about by changes. In complexity sciences, phenomena, issues or problems are considered complex when their systems are tightly interconnected and affect each other’s functioning. Thus, complexity does not mean complication, but interdependence and intertwining. Currently, our key research topics of the group are: • Understanding the meaning of a complex world • Systemic models of societal decision-making and control • Resilience and collective agency • Complexity and social networks

  • Brief description of your project / the project you would like to join:

We are searching for a partner for a project that investigates the social consequences of current crises (Covid, the Ukraine war, challenges to democratic institutions, and the development of extremism). The impact of crises on social, economic, and political institutions is of particular importance. It would be fascinating to investigate the dynamics, mechanisms, and impacts of change from the perspectives of different social groups in a comparative project. We could use systemic change techniques, network analysis, and ethnographic methods to evaluate the change. Finally, it is about preserving the validity of social institutions and building trust and social capital. The inquiry could be multidisciplinary.
