Solastalgia farmers climate change agriculture qualitative research
Looking for qualitative sociologists with a focus on human dimensions of climate change
Solastalgia is a term that has gained traction in recent years to describe the emotional distress and suffering individuals endure when their homes and lands are at risk due to environmental degradation and the effects of climate change. This phenomenon has a detrimental impact on their deep connection and attachment to their surroundings, commonly referred to as their "sense of place." The positive "sense of place" is an essential factor in enhancing mental health and overall well-being, particularly for individuals who have close ties to their natural surroundings in their living and working environments such as farmers. However, currently changes in rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and more frequent severe weather events are having a profound impact on the environment, causing extensive damage at an unprecedented scale and speed, surpassing any historical records in human history. Academic literature recognizes that climate change-induced loss of place has negative emotional and psychological impacts on agrarian communities. The objective of this study is to offer new insights into the relationship between European farmers\' sense of place and their mental health and overall well-being. Furthermore, the objective is to enhance the current knowledge base of both theoretical and practical research regarding the correlation between individuals and their surroundings. This research specifically concentrates on the significance of this connection in relation to mental health and overall well-being, particularly within the context of the continuous impact of climate change.
