The Latvian National Oral History project (within the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Latvia) works on the border between social researchers and the community, uniting professional researchers and volunteers. The cooperation between researchers and members of society has already resulted in the creation of the Latvian OH collection. This collection consists of more than 4500 life stories (life story interviews and in-depth interviews) – many of these life stories have been documented in Latvian communities abroad as well as in ethnic communities within Latvia.
By using the rich material of NOH archive and by conducting new interviews, we aim to disseminate knowledge about the ongoing processes of migration, and integration from past to present and how migration has been experienced in different host countries. We also aim to research migration in relation to ethnic identity and family values among emigrants. Aspects of cultural identity that are important for both the home and the host countries of emigrants can also be researched.
