    The Global Centre for Race Equality (GRACE) is led by academics of colour and benefits from an active membership of colleagues with a track record of race-focused and/or racially inclusive research with a commitment to anti-racism. The project lead, John Wainwright\'s, research has focused on the experiences of children and their families and BAME communities that have had contact with the criminal justice, adoption and fostering, mental health and care systems. He uses creative methodologies to encourage co-production and participatory action research with participants. John is committed to engaging with participants in research that have a real-world impact on the lives of their families and communities.

  • Brief description of your project / the project you would like to join:

    Black and Mixed heritage children are disproportionality represented throughout the criminal (youth) justice system (16%) from initial contact with the police, through stop and search (16%), to sentencing, remand in custody (35%) and in youth custody (41%) (Mullen et al, 2014, Taylor, 2016; Lammy 2017; Robertson and Wainwright, 2020; HMIP, 2021a; YJB/MOJ, 2022). This project aims to explore the extent to which racial inequality leads to black and mixed heritage boys being socially excluded from societies and mental health trauma issues.
