    H - Human Health

  • Keywords:

    orthopaedic field; preclinical models

  • Brief description of your expertise / expertise you are looking for:

The Laboratory of Surgical Sciences and Technologies of the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli has extensive and well-established expertise in the development and application of advanced in vitro experimental models, including cell cultures of bone tissue–derived cells, including differentiated and progenitor cell populations, as well as complex multi-culture and 3D systems. These models are widely used to investigate biological mechanisms and to support preclinical research activities aimed at evaluating the safety and therapeutic efficacy of innovative treatments for traumatic, dysmetabolic, degenerative, infective, and neoplastic diseases, with a particular focus on the musculo-skeletal system. The Laboratory has developed and consolidated robust in vivo experimental modeling, which represents a key asset for the investigation of disease pathogenesis—particularly in the field of musculo-skeletal infections—and for the preclinical evaluation of novel therapeutic strategies, antimicrobial and regenerative approaches, advanced biomaterials, and medical devices. These experimental platforms allow an integrated assessment of host–pathogen interactions, tissue responses, and treatment outcomes, ensuring high translational relevance of the results. To support and integrate preclinical research, the Laboratory routinely performs a broad range of analytical techniques, including molecular biology analyses, biochemical assays and comprehensive histological investigations on both decalcified and non-decalcified tissues. Additional methodologies include histochemical, immunohistochemical, histomorphometric, biomechanical, and microtomographic analyses, allowing for a detailed and multi-level assessment of biological responses and tissue remodeling.

  • Brief description of your project / the project you would like to join:

Based on its consolidated expertise, the laboratory is particularly interested in participating in multidisciplinary and translational research projects focused on the development, optimization, and preclinical validation of innovative therapeutic strategies for musculo-skeletal diseases, with special emphasis on infective conditions. Of specific interest are projects integrating in vitro and in vivo experimental modeling to investigate disease pathogenesis, host–pathogen interactions, and tissue response mechanisms, as well as to evaluate the safety and efficacy of novel pharmacological treatments, advanced biomaterials, tissue-engineered constructs, and medical devices. The Laboratory is well suited to contribute to projects requiring robust preclinical platforms, comprehensive biological and functional outcome assessments, and a strong focus on translational relevance.
