Outpatients; community acquired infections; appropriate antimicrobial prescribing; antimicrobial resistance; public awareness.
We are developing a multidisciplinary project aiming to improve appropriate antibiotic use in outpatient settings, where more than 60% of human antibiotic consumption occurs. The project will combine: A clinical decision-support algorithm/tool to assist clinicians in distinguishing bacterial vs viral infections and prescribing antibiotics more rationally. Public awareness and behaviour-change activities to address patient expectations and promote responsible antibiotic use. Impact evaluation to assess clinical, behavioural, and economic outcomes. To build a strong European consortium, we are searching for partners in the following categories: 1. Clinical Implementation Partners University hospitals, teaching hospitals Primary care networks, family medicine associations Regional or national public health institutes Role: Provide patient flow, support pilot implementation, share prescribing data, ensure guideline alignment. 2. Technical / Digital Health Partners AI/ML or digital health companies Academic groups specialized in clinical decision-support systems Role: Develop the algorithm, integrate the tool into clinical workflow, ensure usability and data management. 3. Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Experts Infectious diseases departments Clinical microbiology units AMS excellence centres Role: Scientific validity, guideline integration, clinician training materials. 4. Behavioural Science & Public Communication Partners Public health communication groups NGOs working on AMR awareness Behaviour change and social marketing teams Role: Design and implement awareness campaigns, analyse public expectations. 5. Health Economics & Policy Evaluation Experts University departments of health economics Policy research institutes Role: Evaluate the clinical and economic impact of the decision-support tool and awareness interventions. 6. Pilot Country Representatives Outpatient clinics and regional health authorities from different EU countries Role: Test the tool in diverse healthcare systems.
This project aims to improve appropriate antibiotic use in outpatient care by developing a clinical decision-support tool that helps clinicians distinguish bacterial from viral infections and prescribe antibiotics more rationally. Since more than 60% of human antibiotic consumption occurs in outpatient settings, the project will focus on identifying factors driving inappropriate prescribing and supporting clinicians with a structured, evidence-based algorithm integrated into daily practice. In parallel, the project will implement public awareness and behaviour-change activities to address patient expectations that frequently influence prescribing decisions. By combining clinician-focused decision support with population-level education, the project seeks to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use, limit the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and strengthen overall antibiotic stewardship at the community level. Effectiveness will be evaluated through clinical, behavioural, and health-economic outcomes across several pilot sites in different countries.
