antibiofilm nanotechnology antimicrobial resistance
I am Dr. Shaimaa A. Khaled, a postdoctoral fellow at Animal Health Research Institute. My current research project focuses on different methods for bacterial detection and food preservation, as well as investigating new and efficient ways to prevent and control the biofilm infection associated with the industry.
Biofilm poses a major challenge for the industry since they allow bacteria to attach to a variety of surfaces and is responsible for equipment damage, food spoilage, outbreaks and cross-contamination between products. Biofilm contributes to higher morbidity and mortality rate since it has a troublesome burden on human health care with the difficulty in treating and eradicating. The conventional chemical and physical methods for biofilm treatment have been rendered ineffective due to the multi-drug resistance. Since biofilm can provide a protective shield that protects the bacteria from antimicrobial compounds. Therefore, multiple and effective strategies are required for biofilm eradication and control. This proposal targets a novel approach in biofilm treatment and prevention with a combination of different compounds targeting matrix disaggregation, quorum sensing, preventing bacterial adherence and killing the bacterial cells.
