The aim of the JPI Urban Europe is to finance international, interdisciplinary research projects that respond to the challenges of modern cities and urban areas. The National Science Centre has been cooperating with the JPI Urban Europe network since 2015.

EN-UAC Urban Accessibility and Connectivity (closed)

The National Science Centre, in cooperation with the JPI Urban Europe network, announces the call for international research projects under the ERA-NET Co-fund Urban Accessibility and Connectivity (EN UAC) call for proposals, concerning subjects related to the development of modern cities and urban areas. The detailed scope of research is described in the call announcement.

Funding proposals may be submitted by international consortia composed of at least 3 research teams from at least 3 countries participating in the call. The principal investigator of the Polish research team must hold at least a PhD degree.

Countries participating in the call: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Latvia, Germany, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and Italy.

Application process:

  • International level: the Polish research team prepares a joint proposal in English in cooperation with its foreign partner and submits it via the electronic submission system of the French Funding Agency (ANR): https://aap.agencerecherche.fr
  • national level: the Polish research team prepares an NCN proposal covering the Polish part of the project and submits it to the NCN via the ZSUN/OSF electronic submission system. Instructions for submitting proposals in the OSF/ZSUN submission system is available here.

Call schedule:

International level (two stages)

  • I STAGE: 17 March 2020, (1:00 pm, CET) - submission deadline for pre-proposals, June 2020 - invitations to submitt full proposals
  • II STAGE: 22 September 2020, (1:00 pm, CET) - submission deadline for full proposals

National level:

  • 29 September 2020 - submission deadline for national applications NCN UNISONO, to be submitted by the Polish research team in ZSUN/OSF system (up to 7 days after the submission deadline for full proposals on international level)

Call results:

  • December 2020 - publication of the list of funded projects
  • Early 2021 - start of the funded projects

In the EN-UAC call, funds may be awarded to cover remuneration for the research team, remuneration and scholarships for students and PhD students, purchase or construction of research equipment and for other costs crucial to the research project.

The total funds allocated by the NCN for the tasks to be performed by Polish research teams in the call amount to EUR 500,000.

Sustainable Urbanisation in the Context of Economic Transformation and Climate Change: Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas (closed)

NCN together with JPI Urban Europe network and Chinese funding agency NSFC is pleased to announce a new call on Sustainable Urbanisation in the Context of Economic Transformation and Climate Change: Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas.

  1. Climate change and new urban economies
  2. Transformation of energy systems and strengthen urban circular economies
  3. Urban public administration and services innovation
  4. Urban data management

Funding is available for international research projects that involve at least two research teams from two different European eligible countries and two (and maximum three) Chinese partners.

Call timetable:

  • 12 April 2018 – deadline for pre-registration
  • 20 June 2018 – deadline for full proposals
  • December 2018 – call results

One joint proposal document (in English, and following the provided template) shall be prepared by the project participants of a joint transnational proposal, and must be submitted to the Call Secretariat by the coordinator.

The call will be presented by representatives from the call secretariat and the participating funding agencies. At the end there will be an Q&A session and the opportunity for applicants to present and pitch their idea for a project.

  1. On the full proposal stage Polish applicants must register their applications in the OSF submission system (UNISONO application). This application includes the following budget table.
  2. We strongly encourage all applicants to read information on eligible costs included in the Annex to NCN Council’s Resolution on funding granted within calls for proposals for international research projects (UNISONO, p. 5-12).
  3. If one international project includes partners from two different Polish Host Institutions, these institutions must apply as a consortium. Each Host Institution comprising the consortium has a separate budget, but the limit on the remuneration applies to the consortium as a whole (UNISONO, p. 8-9: item 2.1.2 a) and b)).
  4. Budget of the Polish part of the research project in the OSF system should be given in PLN (1 EUR= 4,2308 PLN).

Sustainable Urbanisation Global Initiative (SUGI) Food-Water-Energy Nexus (closed)

We would like to invite researchers to submit proposals under Sustainable Urbanisation Global Initiative (SUGI) Food-Water-Energy Nexus call for proposals. The call has three topics to address urgent and long-term challenges within the Food-Water-Energy Nexus.

The call aims to develop more resilient and applied urban solutions that bring inter- and transdisciplinary research and innovation together from across the globe, to benefit a much wider range of stakeholders: i.e. researchers, cities, civil society and business.

The call targets research in the following topics:

  • Robust Knowledge, Indicators and Assessments,
  • Multi-level Governance and Management,
  • Managing Strategies and Solutions.

Funding is available for international research projects that involve at least three researchers from three different eligible countries.

Funding: 28,5 M EUR, including support from Horizon 2020

Participating countries:

Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Cyprus, France, Germany, Japan, Latvia, The Netherlands, Norway, Qatar, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA.

ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures (closed)

We would like to invite researchers to submit proposals under ERA-NET Smart Urban Futures call for proposals. The call targets research in the following topics:

  • Concepts and strategies for smart urban transformation, growth and shrinkage;
  • New dynamics of public services;
  • Inclusive, vibrant and accessible urban communities.

Funding is available for international research projects that involve at least three researchers from three different eligible countries.

Funding: 23,5 M EUR, including support from Horizon 2020

Detailed information

The timetable for applications is:

  • Outline Proposals to be submitted 15th March 2016, 12:00 Central European Time
  • Shortlisted applicants to submit Full Proposals 20th September 2016.

Polish applicants should also submit a short application via OSF system (UNISONO application) by 20th September 2016.

Budget of the Polish part of the research project in the OSF system should be given in PLN. The Euro exchange rate should be calculated according to the NCN Council’s Resolutions no  45/2015 (1 EUR= 4,0198 PLN).
