The NCN director, Prof. Andrzej Jajszczyk, took part in a two-day international conference titled: “Financing Higher Education – In search of effective solutions based on best practices in North America, Europe, and Asia” held in Warsaw on June 28th - 29th, 2013. At the opening ceremony keynote speeches were given by: Undersecretary of State, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Prof. Marek Ratajczak, Undersecretary of State, the Ministry of Finance, Dr Maciej Grabowski, and Director General for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Jan Truszczyński. On the first day of the conference, Prof. Jajszczyk served as a moderator in the panel “How to improve research financing from public and private sources?”. The panelists were as follows:  Dr Dominik Antonowicz, representing the Committee for Evaluation of Scientific Units, Poland; Dr Dieter Dohmen – Director of the Institute for Education and Socio-Economic Research, Berlin, Germany; Dr Philippe Freyssinet – Deputy Director General of the French National Research Agency (ANR), France, and Dr Thomas Bolli from the KOF Swiss Economic Institute, Zurich, Switzerland. During panel discussions, issues of competitive funding and the importance of basic research were raised.
