Over PLN 23 million under SONATINA 4 for research projects carried out by early stage researchers

The results of the fourth SONATINA call are now in. Over PLN 23 million will be awarded to 37 researchers at the onset of their research career to fund research project and fellowships in foreign research institutions.

The call is addressed at individuals who have earned their PhD degree within 3 years prior to the proposal submission year or before 30 June 2020. In the fourth SONATINA call, experts recommended 35 out of 166 proposals for funding, with a total budget of PLN 23,111,323, giving a success rate of 22%. The funds will cover full-time employment of winning researchers in the Polish research institutions, research projects and foreign fellowships over a period of 3 to 6 months.

Researchers from various academic disciplines applied for funding of their research projects. The largest number of projects (65) was submitted by representatives of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, where 11 projects were recommended for funding, with a budget of nearly PLN 7 million. Out of 52 research proposals submitted in the area of Physical Sciences and Engineering, 14 were recommended for funding, with a budget of over PLN 7 million, while out of 48 proposals submitted in the area of Life Sciences, 12 were recommended for funding, with a budget of nearly PLN 9 million.

The objective of the SONATINA call is to support the career development of early stage researchers by creating opportunities for stable employment in Polish research institutions and foreign fellowship enabling them to gain knowledge and experience necessary to take their career to the next levels. After completion of the grant project, researchers may apply for funding of their research projects under the SONATA call addressed at more experienced PhD students or SONATA BIS under which they can create a new research team.
